Half at the Hamptons
Half Marathon Winter Adventure
Race Update:
Thanks to all who braved the slippery roads to participate in the first ever Half at the Hamptons. 829 hardy soles finished the race this year and many loved the course.
An update for many of you asking about the runner needing medical attention. Sadly, one of our friends passed away during the race. Bill Paradis, a local runner and member of the Rochester Runners, passed away at 1:55pm. He will be missed and our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.
According to Don Yeaton
from
he Rochester Runners; Bill had been a member of Rochester Runner's
Club for about 8 or 9 years.
Bill became a club V.P. for several years and was a great inspiration
to new runners. Bill has a cycling background as well and soon
was finding and fixing up bikes for many of us in the club.
Often he just gave them to us FREE so that we could add this
great cross training exercise to our training program. Please
pray for his wife Kathy, his daughter Shana, his son Wayne
and his wife, and 2 grandkids.

2008 Inaugural Race:
Looking for motivation to run this winter? Need to train for
a spring marathon - How about a winter adventure on Hampton
Beach. It's not as bad as it sounds... The average
temperature on a February in Sunday is 35 degrees with an 8-10
mph wind. Not bad for running a good long run, or racing a half
marathon. Plus, we will provide a scenic coastal loop and provide
accomplished PACERS to help you reach your goals and meet your
times.
The Course: You'll start and finish in Hampton Beach at the classy Ashworth by the Sea Hotel and the "old lady of the sea" Marine Memorial.
From there the course travels over fairly flat rural roads
in Hampton and North Hampton for 8 miles and then run 5 miles
back to the finish with the ocean directly on your left.
WALKERS & RUNNERS WELCOME----The race welcomes walkers and runners of all abilities from all over the country. While this is a brand new race, we do expect over 1000 runners to celebrate their fitness over this most scenic course.
Course Elevation ----The course is relatively
easy with the last several miles 9 to 13 being relatively flat.
.
Weather History ----The weather on this date
averages 38 degrees and 85% of the time the weather is dry with
winds 8-12 mph. *15% of the time...well let's say its winter
in New Hampshire.
PACERS: Looking to run a certain time? Join our accomplished pacers for any pace from 6:30/mile to 12:00/mile. Our pacers will keep you right on track the whole way.
After Race Party- - Celebrate your walk or run in the elegance of the Ashworth by the Sea ballroom for the after-race feast including Harpoon Brewery BEER
- What registered runners and walkers receive?
-Race Charities: Steps2Live, and Local track & XC teams
-Event Organization : This event will be professionally timed and organized.
2008 Results:
Race Photo's will be available by Wednesday the 13th.
RACE Course Notes
Course Certification NH 08003RF - USA TF
There have been questions about course. . The
course is officially a half marathon and has been certified and
measured according to the strict rules of the USATF.
Each mile also was marked and despite the inclement weather we
found each one and put up a cone exactly at each marker. We are
unsure if the cones were moved though... but hopefully they were
not.
Mile splits may more likely be different because of the many curves
in the road. This course had many curvy sections. I ran the course
myself, last Saturday and recorded 13.2 miles on my GPS. I suspect
the extra 1 tenth of a mile is due to the many many curves on
the course. Official courses take the EXACT shortest distance,
meaning they cut the tangents on each corner.
If you take very good care to do this running, you will often
get the 13.1 distance exact.
Finally, despite our explicit directions, the police told people
to travel on the right hand side of the road for a while This
may have caused some runners to go longer on the course.
Sorry about that...we will do better next year.
